Less than 10 days after returning from flamingos in Mexico trip (report here), we had the opportunity to go on a fox hunt with our Canons (our camera brand, not fire arms).
Our review of the science told us that our type of travel (outdoors chasing wildlife and avoiding crowded places) was still low risk. The new CDC mask guidance and our completed vaccine course of 2 doses increased our comfort level with the risk any trip has. While the country was still dealing with the pandemic, with tricks like this we didn’t need to take a ruler to practice physical distancing
the hunt was successful as we quickly found fox 2 dens, one with 7 kits(pups) and the other with 3. The kits were out of their burrows, and one of the highlights was their playing with each other.
The fox moms are attentive parents, and showered their kits with attention, which was reciprocated.
The kits were of an age that it was time for them to learn how to hunt. The parents would bring voles they had caught back to the kits, who would take them away to eat.
The dens were in the middle of rabbit territory, and there were numerous rabbit warrens in the area, which didn’t make much sense to us as rabbits are a major part of the foxes diet.
But nature has its mysterious ways and most survive, as the one above did.
Two trips in 3 weeks was enough for awhile, and we returned home until our next trip in July.
